Saxony's regional history is also reflected in traditional clothing. The traditional costumes of the Sorbs and the miners' uniforms are well known, others less so. This is set to change.

A digital interactive map presents the various traditional costume regions in Saxony for the first time. According to the State Chancellery in Dresden, the traditional outfits captured as 3D scans - from the Steiger to the Hochzeitsbitter - can be explored from all sides. In addition to the Sorbian costumes, the most beautiful models from Vogtland, Upper Lusatia and the Ore Mountains have also been digitized.

"Traditional costumes have almost disappeared from our everyday lives and are increasingly being forgotten," said Jakob Gruhl, founder of the start-up Ectoplastic. The company has developed digital technologies that help preserve the intangible Unesco cultural heritage of Sorbian traditional costumes. The aim is to build a bridge from the encounter with traditional costume culture in the digital space to reality, and not just for lovers of traditional costumes and parade uniforms.

From tradition to textile adaptations

With the new campaign under its umbrella brand "So geht sächsisch", the Free State is focusing on "dressy customs and pride of home" after the dialects. "Eine Tracht Heimat" spans the spectrum from fashion and design to contemporary textiles with around 500 textile companies based across the state as well as young designers who reinterpret the traditional in a fresh, modern way.

"Traditional costumes are magnificent and symbolic expressions of our cultural heritage," said Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). This cultural asset unites people, creates a sense of togetherness and bears witness to the diversity of society. The traditional costumes are also a sign of solidarity with the homeland, a reflection of history, customs and regional characteristics.
