The Greens in the state parliament accuse the CDU-led Ministry of Finance of using the time until a valid double budget to make savings. "There would have been more funds for management without legal concerns if the CDU-led Ministry of Finance had not exploited the budget-free period as a cost-cutting measure at the expense of the people of the Free State," said MP Claudia Maicher.
Preliminary budget management provides for restrictions
The background to this are restrictions in the course of the so-called provisional budget management. As Saxony only got a new government shortly before Christmas, budget negotiations are only now picking up speed and are likely to drag on until the summer. The Ministry of Finance is therefore not making the full amount of funds available.
"The coalition between the CDU and SPD has given culture in Saxony the worst possible start to the new year," said Maicher. With a few exceptions, all funded institutions from independent and municipal theaters to festivals and remembrance culture projects are facing considerable financial gaps and only 30 percent of the previous year's requirements have been approved.
Greens request the release of additional funds for culture
According to Maicher, the Greens do not want to accept the uncertainty for staff and the threat to cultural structures. "The damage to society is already huge. It will continue to grow if no improvements are made." In a motion, the Greens propose revising the administrative regulation on provisional budget management and releasing more funds.
