More people were deported in Saxony last year. In 2024, 936 deportations were registered, according to the state directorate. In 2023, 845 people were deported.
Thirty-three percent of the people deported were convicted criminals. The main countries of destination for deportations last year were Georgia, Tunisia, North Macedonia, Turkey and Iraq. In addition, according to the figures, 950 people left voluntarily last year.
Meanwhile, Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster has announced that the planned departure center for rejected asylum seekers should go into operation in the first half of this year if possible. The CDU politician said this in an interview with the "Sächsische Zeitung" and the "Leipziger Volkszeitung". He did not specify the exact location.
In their coalition agreement, the CDU and SPD had agreed to test the departure center. "With the pilot project, we are testing how we can noticeably reduce the burden on local authorities when returning people and how we can further increase the success rate of deportations," explained Schuster. The residence requirement should apply to those affected. This means that they are basically obliged to stay there. In the medium term, the center should have a capacity of around 100 places.
