On Monday evening, people once again demonstrated against right-wing extremism in several cities in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. For example, a demonstration took place in Weimar, Thuringia, which was also attended by Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Left Party). According to the police, the demonstration was peaceful. The organizers had announced 1000 participants. According to the police, there were several gatherings against the right in Thuringia that evening.
According to the police, demonstrations against the right also took place in Freiberg in Saxony and in Magdeburg. The police have not yet provided any information on how many people attended.
Hundreds of thousands took to the streets across Germany at the weekend to demonstrate against right-wing extremism. "According to what the police have counted nationwide, around 910,600 people took part in demonstrations against right-wing extremism at the weekend," said Maximilian Kall, spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior, in Berlin on Monday.
A total of around 360,000 people took to the streets on Saturday. According to the information, around 550,000 demonstrators took to the streets on Sunday. The demonstrations were also a signal to all people with a migration background living in Germany "that they clearly belong", said the ministry spokesperson. The protest in Munich had to be called off on Sunday due to excessive crowds.
The protests were triggered by revelations from the Correctiv research center about a meeting of right-wing extremists on 25 November, which was attended by several AfD politicians as well as individual members of the CDU and the very conservative Werteunion in Potsdam. The former head of the far-right Identitarian movement in Austria, Martin Sellner, spoke about "remigration" at the meeting, according to his own statements. When right-wing extremists use the term, they usually mean that a large number of people of foreign origin should leave the country - even under duress.
