After the AfD's good performance in the state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg, CSU leader Markus Söder warns of a permanent change in the party landscape. "Make no mistake about it. These elections are now, but they are shaping results for the future if nothing changes and if this process continues, it will be difficult," said the Bavarian Minister President after a meeting of the CSU party executive in Munich. With combined results of around 30 percent, the AfD is the number one party in the east.
After all, the last state elections were a major turning point, said Söder. It remains to be feared that the AfD will become even stronger in future elections.
"The difficulty is that anti-AfD emergency coalitions are now being formed everywhere, and we are not even sure whether they will fit together at all," Söder emphasized. These are alliances that would have been unthinkable without the AfD, especially when it comes to the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance. He did not want to give any advice to the parties that were currently exploring the issue, but there should also be a discussion about how to deal with the BSW.
At national level, alliances with the BSW are an absolute no-go for the CDU/CSU, said Söder. He was very grateful to CDU leader Friedrich Merz for making this very clear, especially with regard to foreign policy.
