The Thuringian Bundesliga women's handball team outplay the title contenders from Romania in the European League. Goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle paves the way, the second half turns into a spectacle.

The handball players of Thüringer HC have their sights set on reaching the quarter-finals of the European League. The team of Head Coach Herbert Müller put in an impressive performance to beat Romanian top club HC Dunarea Braila by a surprisingly clear 38:28 (16:11) and so celebrated its third win in its fourth game in Group A. Johanna Reichert was the best scorer with twelve goals. THC also won the direct comparison with Braila. The Romanians had won the first leg 26:22.

The Thuringians got off to a nervous start to the game and initially failed repeatedly against the visitors' goalkeeper Elena Serban. It was not until the sixth minute that Reichert scored the first goal for the THC. The hosts then forced a duel at eye level. They caused the favorites major problems, especially with their quick transition play.

Playing like in a frenzy

The game was completely even up to 8:8 (16th minute) before THC goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle hit top form. With ten saves in the first half, she played a decisive role in enabling the Thuringians to open up a five-goal gap by the break.

In the second half, the home side played itself into a frenzy at times, excelling with quick ball movement and consistent finishing. The THC led by double digits for the first time in the 45th minute (27:17). Although the visitors put up a fight once more, the Thuringians did not let up until the end and deserved to win by that margin.
