In its search for a new coach, RB Leipzig now apparently has a former world and European champion on its list. The Bundesliga club is reportedly looking at Cesc Fàbregas, according to the "Leipziger Volkszeitung". The report does not name a source, but instead mentions the good contacts between Fàbregas' former team-mate Thierry Henry and RB supervisory board chairman Oliver Mintzlaff.
Fàbregas is currently coach of the Italian first division promoted team Como 1907. The team is in a secure mid-table position. The club has recently become better known due to its famous fans. Hollywood stars such as Hugh Grant, Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley have sat in the stands in Como. Henry is a shareholder in the ex-club of former international Hansi Müller.
Candidate list growing longer
Since parting ways with Marco Rose at the end of March, the team has been coached by Zsolt Löw. The 45-year-old is actually part of the team of global RB soccer boss Jürgen Klopp and would like to return there after the end of the season. Löw, who has already worked as an assistant in Leipzig, has ruled out any further involvement in Leipzig.
The club is looking for a successor who can play attacking soccer worth watching, raise young talents to a new level of market value and, at best, has already been active in the RB cosmos. The latter does not apply to Fàbregas and the other criteria have yet to be proven. The Spaniard is therefore likely to be an outsider at best.
Leipzig's list of candidates is getting longer almost by the day. Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), Roger Schmidt (without a club), Danny Röhl (Sheffield Wednesday) and Alexander Blessin (St. Pauli) are said to be on the list, as is Matthias Jaissle, who is currently working in Saudi Arabia. The final decision will be made by head of sport Marcel Schäfer.
