The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team have made a successful start to their tenth Bundesliga season. The team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson won its home game against TVB Stuttgart on Sunday afternoon in front of 3692 spectators with a commanding 33:24 (15:12). The best scorer was Matej Klima with seven goals. SC DHfK had already beaten Stuttgart (34:29) in preparation.
Without a new signing in the starting seven, Leipzig got off to the better start. Olympic silver medallist Luca Witzke scored his first goal of the season after 84 seconds and the home side led 4:1 after nine minutes. It was thanks to their goalkeeper Milan Vujovic that Stuttgart, who were completely indisposed in attack at the start, did not fall further behind.
Tempo picks up
The visitors then immediately punished SC DHfK's first phase of weakness by equalizing at 4:4 (14th minute). From the middle of the first half, the pace picked up on both sides and so did the game's appeal. A change of goalkeeper also paid off for Leipzig. The Norwegian Olympic participant Kristian Saeveras, who came on for Domenico Ebner, immediately got into the game and helped the home side take a three-goal lead into the break.
Sigtryggsson's side got off to a furious start in the second half and pulled 20:12 (37') ahead with a 5:0 run. Although the home side's momentum waned somewhat after that, Stuttgart was not able to capitalize on that, as Saeveras (ten saves in total) continued to hold firm. Leipzig stepped up their game in the final phase and led by ten goals at one point.
