The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team missed out on their second home win in four days despite a strong fighting performance. The team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson was beaten 30:33 (15:15) by second-placed Füchse Berlin in front of 6,000 spectators on Sunday afternoon. The best scorer for SC DHfK, who remain in twelfth place with 17:25 points, was national player Luca Witzke with ten goals. World handball player Mathias Gidsel stood out for the Foxes with eight goals.
The club from Leipzig started confidently and took a 6:3 lead (11th minute) against the Foxes, who initially appeared somewhat unfocused. However, the home side then made an increasing number of technical mistakes. Berlin picked up the pace and turned the game around with a 5:1 run to make it 8:7 in the 15th minute.
Equalizer at the break
After a timeout by Sigtryggsson, Leipzig stabilized again and made life very difficult for the favorites, in particular with its brilliantly orchestrated defense by Marko Mamic. William Bogojevic equalized for Leipzig with a powerful shot shortly before the break.
However, the home side dropped off considerably in the second half. They were too static in attack and repeatedly made avoidable mistakes. They only managed to score their first goal after just under ten minutes and trailed 17:24 by the 44th minute against Berlin, who were now playing in commanding fashion. However, the visitors then took it too easy. Led by the outstanding Witzke, Leipzig, who never gave up, fought back to within two goals in the final spell, but were no longer able to seriously threaten Berlin's victory.
