After its false start in the Champions League, SC Magdeburg has redeemed itself in the Handball Bundesliga. The team of coach Bennet Wiegert won 35:28 (20:13) against TBV Lemgo on Sunday and remains in the chasing position of the top duo Melsungen and Berlin with four wins from five games. On Wednesday, the defending champion SCM had to accept a 28:33 against the Hungarian top team Vezprem in the premier league.
Until the middle of the first half, it was an even game in front of 6300 fans. Then the SCM used a 10:4 series to set off clearly until the break. After the change, the picture was similar. Lemgo kept up, came a little closer to the SCM again. However, the 2022 champions never really got into trouble and in the end deserved to win at home. Best Magdeburger Werfer was playmaker Felix Claar with two twelve goals.
On Saturday one already sets the course for the future with the SCM and announced the contract extension with Nikolas Portner. The Swiss national goalkeeper remains until 2027 in Magdeburg. The 29-year-old had changed in the past year from Chambery Savoie HB from France to Magdeburg and brought equal in his first season the club world championship as well as the victory in the royal class.
"I feel very comfortable here with my family and we have found a second home with the SCM family. I am also convinced that we still have a lot of potential with the team to achieve great things," said Portner. That the keeper would stay had been certain for some time. "We were already in agreement with Niko about an extension before the Champions League Final4 and then finalized it during the summer break," Wiegert said.
