For Matej Klima, the handball season has ended prematurely. The 25-year-old backcourt player from Bundesliga club SC DHfK Leipzig will be out for a long time with a serious knee injury. This was announced by the club following an MRI scan at Leipzig University Hospital on Friday. The Czech will be operated on by team doctor Prof. Dr. Pierre Hepp in the coming week.
"This is a huge shock for all of us and I feel incredibly sorry for Matej. He's a fighter and in the best medical hands here. The countdown to his comeback starts now and I'm sure he'll come back even stronger. At the same time, we are working intensively on who can replace Matej until then so that we don't run out of steam and secure our goals," said DHfK managing director Karsten Günter.
Klima was injured in the narrow 27:28 home defeat against MT Melsungen. After just six minutes, he twisted his ankle after his jump shot to make it 3:1 and was only able to leave the court with support. The backcourt player is also considered an important piece of the puzzle in Leipzig's defense. His absence is a serious setback for the team.
