The world's luge and bobsleigh elite regularly compete in the Eastern Ore Mountains. The state supports the ice track in Altenberg - also by hosting international competitions.

This year and next year, the Free State of Bavaria is sponsoring five international competitions on the Altenberg luge and bobsleigh track in the Eastern Ore Mountains. Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) presented the Wintersport Altenberg GmbH with a total of 180,000 euros on the sidelines of the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup.

"The Altenberg Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup has been a permanent fixture in the international winter sports calendar for years," said Schuster according to the press release. The state government's support for top-class sport is also a commitment to the location and top-class sport in Bavaria and its globally successful ambassadors.

The ice track is an established venue on the national and international competition calendar. The artificial ice track was officially inaugurated in 1987 and the 2024 Luge World Championships were the third to be held at Kohlgrund after 1996 and 2012.
