As soon as the final whistle blew after the nerve-wracking game at RB Leipzig, he had to slow down his heart rate in the catacombs. The SC Freiburg coach treated himself to a cigarette on the team bus after the 3:1 defeat on Sunday evening before returning to the stadium for the interviews. At the subsequent press conference, the 58-year-old coach gave an insight into his feelings. "I'm extremely disappointed. It could have been possible today, we've lost to Leipzig so many times now. It really could have been possible today, but in the end you end up with nothing again," said Streich, bemoaning another missed opportunity. The Breisgau side remained winless against Leipzig for the tenth game in a row.
After a weak opening phase with Xavi Simons conceding an early goal (6th minute), Freiburg equalized through Merlin Röhl (45.+6). Two goals were then scored in a turbulent second half - but neither counted. "We're still well in it after the break, we score two offside goals and then the foul in the penalty area, Vincenzo goes where he shouldn't go," said Streich, explaining the decisive scene in the final phase when Vincenzo Grifo fouled Christoph Baumgartner. Lois Openda scored from the penalty spot (79') before Baumgartner (80') marked the final point.
