The women's handball club Thüringer HC has cemented second place in the German league. The team of Head Coach Herbert Müller defeated Frisch Auf Göppingen by a clear 43:30 (20:17) on Wednesday evening after a furious attacking performance.
In the eighth home win of the season, league top scorer Johanna Reichert became the THC's best scorer with 13 goals and the club now has 29:9 points.
Wrong start and furious comeback
After a three-week break, the club from Thuringia got off to a sluggish start in front of 941 spectators and needed more than six minutes to score its first goal. The attacking play was characterized by many inaccuracies and the hosts were frighteningly passive in defense.
As a result, the carefree visitors pulled away to 8:2 by the eleventh minute. However, the THC then stepped up the pace immensely and developed much more drive on goal. The deficit shrank steadily and Johanna Reichert put the Thuringians ahead for the first time in the 26th minute (16:15).
A record number of goals at the end of a dominant second half
The home side, led by the outstanding Reichert, continued to dominate after the break with its fast-paced play and quickly pulled 24:18 ahead in the 33rd minute. Although Göppingen did not give up and had good scenes in attack, it was not able to stop THC's attacking frenzy at any time. With 43 goals, the Thuringians set a new scoring record in this Bundesliga season.
