The 16th century Grillenburg hunting lodge in Tharandt, which has been unused for a long time, is to become the science and conference center of the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD). The federal and state governments are each investing 18 million euros in the project, as the TUD announced on Wednesday. Chancellor Jan Gerken spoke of a further step towards establishing the urgently needed facility. The substantial support from the federal and state governments makes it possible to develop the Schlossinsel site to "high standards of sustainability, accommodation and experience".
A place of science and tourist attraction
"Schloss Grillenburg will once again be a place with charisma - here in the Tharandt Forest, TU Dresden is making its excellence shine in a new way," said Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). The course has been set for the creation of a very special center that will bring together scientists from all over the world, but will also draw the attention of tourists to "the charm of this beautiful area".
The renovation of the hunting lodge, the construction of a hotel village and the renovation of the "New Hunter's House" from 1938 are planned from 2025. The design also envisages the restoration of the historic gardens and the integration of new buildings and rooms into the existing ensemble of the castle island - according to current planning, the work will take up to four years.
