In contrast to the nationwide trend, the number of wolf packs living in Saxony is decreasing slightly.

Saxony has 37 wolf packs - putting it in third place in a Germany-wide comparison. Compared to the previous year, the number fell by one in the 2023/2024 monitoring year, contrary to the national trend, according to data from the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) in Bonn. There were also six pairs of wolves. Offspring were confirmed in 33 of the 43 territories, with 106 pups.

The highest number of wolf families (58) lived in Brandenburg, followed by Lower Saxony (48). The number of wolf packs detected throughout Germany rose to 209. In the previous monitoring period of 2022/23, the nationwide number of wolf packs was 184.

More than 40,000 reports and detections from the federal states were evaluated for the current monitoring year. The Federal Documentation and Advisory Center on Wolves (DBBW) was involved in the publication. In addition to the 209 wolf families, a further 46 wolf pairs and 19 sedentary individual wolves were confirmed.

In the monitoring year, which lasted from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024, 1,601 wolf individuals were detected in the confirmed territories. The count included 535 adult wolves, 162 yearlings, i.e. animals in their second year of life, and 781 pups. In the previous period, 1,339 animals had been counted.
