From next Tuesday, the permanent exhibition at the Lessing Museum in Kamenz (Bautzen district) will be closed for two years due to renovation work. The official start of the work is on May 19, the museum announced. This is to take place following the ceremony marking the first documentary mention of Kamenz 800 years ago.
An extension of the Lessinghaus is planned. The upper floor in particular will be remodeled in order to better present special exhibitions in the future. The reopening of the museum is planned for 2027 as part of the 56th Kamenz Lessing Days.
Despite the closure, the cultural offerings are not to be completely discontinued: An interim exhibition is currently being prepared and will be shown in the vaulted cellar of the Kamenz Malzhaus. Educational museum events for school classes will also remain on the program. Guided tours of the city in Lessing's footsteps and special exhibitions in other cultural institutions such as the Malzhaus, the Gallery in the Sacred Museum and the DADA Center are not affected by the construction work.
