The German painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), who would have been 250 years old this year, will be honored for the first time with a major exhibition in the USA. More than 75 works by Friedrich, who is considered one of the most important Romantic painters, will be on display at the renowned Metropolitan Museum in New York from February to May 2025, as announced by the exhibition hall on Tuesday.
The last time there were smaller exhibitions of works by Friedrich in the USA was in 1990 and 2001. Numerous German museums, including the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, are helping with the conception of the planned show "Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature".
Friedrich is "Germany's most popular painter" and his work "brilliantly illuminates our understanding of nature as a spiritual and emotional landscape", said the Austrian director of the Metropolitan Museum, Max Hollein. In the anniversary year, there were and are also numerous exhibitions of Friedrich's works in Germany, for example in his native city of Greifswald and in Dresden.
