Agricultural work is considered difficult and often requires overtime, especially at harvest time. Fewer and fewer people are working in the sector - and not just in Saxony.

The number of people employed in agriculture is also decreasing in Saxony. According to the latest figures, around 27,900 women and men were still working in 6,490 agricultural businesses in 2023, around 2,400 workers or eight percent fewer than in the last survey three years ago, as reported by the Saxony State Statistical Office in Kamenz. Across Germany, the number of employees in this sector fell by around seven percent in the same period.

Germany-wide, family workers represented the largest group of employees with a share of 45 percent, it said. Women made up a third of the workforce in Saxony, with one in six businesses (17 percent) being run by a woman. Nationwide, this proportion was only 11 percent on average.

45 percent of all farms generated income from sources other than agricultural production in 2023. Of the 2,930 farms with additional sources of income, 48% stated that they marketed agricultural products directly. 29 percent carried out work for other farms and 24 percent generated renewable energy as an additional source of income.
