Egg production in Saxony increased significantly in 2024. According to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz, around 961 million eggs were produced - around 70 million more than in the previous year. This made the Free State the fifth-largest egg producer in Germany with a share of just under seven percent of German egg production.
The increase was evident in all types of farming. Organic egg production rose particularly strongly, increasing by 15 percent to around 55 million eggs. However, barn eggs still accounted for the largest share (85 percent). According to the statisticians, cage farming no longer played a role in Bavaria.
Laying performance also increased: on average, a Saxon hen laid 311 eggs - nine more than in the previous year. Free-range hens laid 314 eggs, organic hens 312 and free-range hens 283 eggs.
