Saxony sees the planned relocation of Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC to Dresden on schedule. "We are making very good progress with TSMC's relocation process in Dresden," explained State Chancellery Leader Oliver Schenk (CDU) in Dresden on Tuesday. The new plant will further strengthen Saxony's position as a leading European semiconductor location, from which Taiwan will also benefit. Schenk is traveling to Taiwan this Wednesday with a delegation. He also intends to discuss opportunities for cooperation in research and development. At the same time, Saxony wants to present itself to Taiwanese companies as an attractive technology location.

In recent years, Taiwan and Saxony have significantly intensified their economic relations. The Asian island state of Taiwan currently ranks ninth as an export country for Saxon products, while Taiwan ranks 11th in terms of imports. The most important import and export goods are products from the electrical and mechanical engineering sectors as well as chemical precursors.

TSMC announced in summer 2023 that it would build a semiconductor plant in Dresden by 2027. The Group expects the total investment sum to exceed ten billion euros. Half of this is expected to be funded by the German government.
