The chip company Intel is postponing the construction of a plant in Magdeburg. This has no significance for the establishment of TSMC in Dresden.

The announced postponement of the major Intel project in Magdeburg has no impact on the construction of the first chip factory of the Taiwanese semiconductor company TSMC in Dresden. "The plans remain unchanged. The projects in Magdeburg and Dresden are independent of each other," said Frank Bösenberg, Managing Director of the Silicon Saxony industry network, when asked by dpa. They are optimistic about the future.

The US company Intel, which is struggling with losses, wants to put the construction of a plant in Magdeburg on hold for the time being. The German government had pledged almost ten billion euros for this. The ground-breaking ceremony was planned for this year. Around 3,000 jobs were to be created. The investment was estimated at around 30 billion euros.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the chip factory in Dresden took place in mid-August. The investment of a good ten billion euros is a joint project between the Taiwanese industry giant TSMC and the companies Bosch, Infineon and NXP Semiconductor, which are already based in Dresden. TSMC is to hold 70 percent of the company, with the other partners each holding ten percent. Production is scheduled to start in 2027. The focus will be on chips for the automotive industry. 2,000 jobs are associated with TSMC's first factory in Europe.
