2,300 tons of steel in motion: Construction of the new Mulde bridge near Grimma is making progress. The project should be completed by 2028.

The construction of the new Mulde bridge on highway 14 near Grimma is making progress: The bridge is being pushed over the river in stages. "The sixth of a total of seven shifts of the new Mulde bridge Grimma is currently running as planned," said Bernd Urbank, project manager of the highway construction company Deges. The next construction phase began on Thursday: the bridge, which currently weighs 2,300 tons, is being pushed around 100 metres over the Mulde valley using the incremental launching method.

"We are planning the final launching at the end of April, lowering the bridge onto the piers and starting construction of the roadway," explained Urbank. In summer 2026, traffic will be shifted to the first superstructure. The old bridge will then be demolished and construction of the second superstructure will begin.

The old Mulde bridge dates back to the early 1970s and has been severely affected by increasing traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles. It is therefore now to be replaced by a new bridge. Construction of the 361-metre-long structure began in October 2022 and is due to be completed by 2028. The total costs amount to around 80 million euros and will be borne by the federal government. According to a traffic forecast, 45,700 vehicles will cross the new bridge every day in 2030.
