Germany has a reliable power supply. This is according to data from the Federal Network Agency. Outages are also rare in Bavaria.

The power supply in Saxony was slightly more reliable than the national average last year. In 2023, Saxon end consumers were affected by power outages lasting longer than three minutes for an average of 9.3 minutes, according to the latest figures from the Federal Network Agency on long-term interruptions. Although this means that the state has worsened compared to the previous year (6.3 minutes), it is more than 3 minutes below the German national average (12.8 minutes).

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reached the top value in 2023 with 8.3 minutes, ahead of Saarland (8.6 minutes) and Lower Saxony (8.7 minutes). Saxony follows behind. Bringing up the rear are Thuringia (21.4 minutes) and Rhineland-Palatinate (19.4 minutes).

German electricity supply "very reliable"

According to the Federal Network Agency, the electricity supply throughout Germany continues to be "very reliable". "The quality of the electricity supply in Germany remains at a very high level. This shows that we are making progress with the energy transition without compromising the security of supply," said Klaus Müller, President of the Agency.

A comparison with neighboring countries also shows that the German electricity grid is still one of the most reliable in Europe. In 2023, renewable energies covered more than half of Germany's electricity consumption for the first time at around 53%.

More than 158,000 power outages across Germany

In total, 852 distribution system operators reported 158,360 supply interruptions in the low and medium voltage for the past year - including shorter power outages lasting three minutes or less. The total number of fault reports increased by 1,115 compared to the previous year. Extreme events such as the flood disaster in the Ahr valley in 2021 are considered force majeure and are not included in the calculation.
