In future, Saxony will provide funding for the development of intelligent energy systems as well as grids and storage systems at a local level. The cabinet approved a corresponding expansion of the Energy and Climate funding program on Tuesday, as announced by State Secretary Gerd Lippold (Greens) in Dresden. A total of 51.7 million euros will be made available for this funding area by the end of 2027, 39 million of which will come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 12.7 million from the Free State of Saxony.
For a stable power supply and efficient utilization of the electricity grids, adapted smart grids on site and storage technologies are needed, said Lippold. "This is exactly where our additional funding will come in." For example, funding can be provided for projects to connect renewable energies to electricity grids if they are not economically viable. Potential recipients are local authorities and municipal companies, cooperatives, local renewable energy communities or companies.
With the ever-increasing share of renewable energies in electricity generation, the aim is to keep security of supply stable and on a cost-optimized path, said Lippold. The expansion of renewable energies has gained such momentum in recent years that a number of problems need to be solved now that were thought to have years to go.
