In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, some universities offer part-time courses - but there are differences in the three federal states, as an analysis shows.

There are more than 12,000 part-time students in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. This is according to an analysis by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE). Part-time study enables many students to better combine their studies with childcare or work.

In Thuringia, the proportion in the winter semester 2023/2024 was 2.9 percent (4,237 students). Compared to the previous winter semester, the proportion fell by 0.4 percentage points. In Saxony, on the other hand, the proportion of students enrolled part-time remained the same at 5.3% (5,440 students) compared to the winter semester 2022/2023. In Saxony-Anhalt, the figure rose slightly - by 0.1 percentage points to 4.5 percent (2,570 students).

However, the number of part-time degree courses there fell slightly compared to 2022. In Thuringia, the proportion of part-time courses has fallen significantly - by 13.4 percentage points. With a share of 38.9 percent in 2024, the Free State is still in fourth place compared to other federal states, followed by Saxony in fifth place.

Slightly fewer part-time students in Germany

The average nationwide figure remained at 7.6 percent. This means that 217,400 people across Germany were studying part-time. This is around 6,000 fewer students than in the previous year. Hamburg (21.4 percent) and North Rhine-Westphalia (13.5 percent) lead the way in terms of the proportion of part-time students.

The number of courses, examinations and written exams per semester is significantly reduced for part-time students. Depending on the university, block or weekend seminars, courses after work or distance learning courses are offered.
