After the failure of a joint government alliance with the CDU and SPD, the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance now wants to work constructively in opposition. First plans have been set.

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) wants to prevent further cost explosions in Saxony with a care law. The draft law should include a limit on the personal contributions of those affected as well as the investment costs for care homes, said BSW party and parliamentary group leader Sabine Zimmermann. For 30 years, not much had happened in terms of investment. "Now is the time to put some money into it."

Relatives of people in need of care should be better relieved

"Above all, we would like to legislate to relieve the burden on relatives of people in need of care. The care they provide could be better taken into account in their pension, for example. After all, these people provide a great deal of care," Zimmermann told the German Press Agency. The Care Act was one of the plans agreed by the 15-strong BSW parliamentary group at a closed meeting.

Refugees should do community work in the municipalities

On the subject of migration, Zimmermann announced a motion in parliament. Migration must above all be aimed at good integration for refugees. "It makes sense to involve them in public life right from the start. We are in favour of them getting involved in local communities through charitable work," emphasized the parliamentary group leader. The BSW also wants to critically monitor the implementation of the Saxon Hospital Act.

The BSW in Saxony became the third-strongest party in the state elections on September 1, 2024 with 11.8 percent of the vote. Exploratory talks with the CDU and SPD to form a joint government failed, partly because they were unable to agree on a peace formula that the BSW wanted. There were also differences on the topics of finance and migration.

Zimmermann still defends the decision to withdraw from the exploratory talks. "Many people voted for us because we stand for change." In opposition, the BSW now has other opportunities to increase the pressure on the minority government made up of the CDU and SPD and push through its own issues.
