The decision to station further units of the German armed forces in Saxony is expected to be made this year. This was announced by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) on Tuesday after a joint meeting of the Saxon cabinet with federal ministers in Berlin. "Saxony is of great importance to our Bundeswehr. The state's commitment to the troops is exemplary (...). The question is not whether we station in Saxony, but where we station in Saxony," the Saxon State Chancellery quoted the defense minister as saying.
According to the State Chancellery, the Federal Ministry of Defense is considering possible locations in the counties of Bautzen and Görlitz for a stationing of troops until the end of the year. As a possible location is about Weißwasser in the conversation. "The Saxon state government remains committed to a settlement of the Bundeswehr in Upper Lusatia. There, the Free State of Saxony offers attractive and reasonable location options for the Bundeswehr," said Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU).
