Resistance is also mounting in Saxony against CDU plans for a stricter migration policy. Fridays For Future (FFF) and other initiatives and associations have announced a demonstration march from the city center to the exhibition grounds in Dresden this afternoon. CDU leader Friedrich Merz was due to make an election campaign appearance there in the late afternoon. The FFF announced that it would accompany the event.
Christian Democratic Party's actions spark protest
The organizers of the protest called on the public to actively oppose any form of cooperation with the AfD. "We are making it clear: no party that holds anything to its fundamental democratic values should work with the far-right AfD. Everywhere in Europe, we see how far-right parties are destroying liberal democracies," emphasized Anton Festag, spokesperson for the "Schülis gegen Rechts" initiative.
Union pushes its plans through the Bundestag even with AfD votes
On Wednesday, the CDU/CSU narrowly pushed its five-point plan for a stricter migration policy through the Bundestag with votes from the AfD, FDP and independents. For the first time, the AfD secured a majority in plenary. On Friday, parliament will vote on a Union bill. It contains regulations to curb migration.
Fridays For Future speaks of disgrace
Fridays For Future spoke of a disgrace. They did not want to let Friedrich Merz get away with this "unforgivable disgrace" and were therefore taking to the streets. A rally under the slogan "Stop Merz & AfD - Defend the right to asylum - Rebuild the firewall!" was also announced in Leipzig in the afternoon.
