The mayor of Radebeul, Bert Wendsche (non-party), must answer the question of a city councillor regarding the naming of Mohrenstraße. This was decided by the Saxon Higher Administrative Court (OVG) in Bautzen at the end of November, as the court announced on Thursday.
With reference to the public debate on the renaming of Mohrenstraße, the city council had asked whether information was available on the reasons why the street was given this name at the beginning of the 20th century. Wendsche refused to answer on the grounds that there were no current facts. The Dresden Administrative Court followed this reasoning.
The city council appealed against this decision to the OVG in Bautzen. There, the judges found that the mayor had violated the rights of the city council. According to the Saxon municipal code, he had to answer questions on individual city matters. According to the OVG, this was the case in this instance.
The court sees a topical reference in the current discussion about the renaming. Wendsche was not allowed to refer to his own research in the city archives.
The OVG did not allow an appeal against this ruling, but the city of Radebeul can file an appeal against it.
