In future, rejected asylum seekers will no longer be distributed to the municipalities in the Free State, but will be housed centrally until they leave the country.

The start of the Saxon departure center for rejected asylum seekers agreed by the CDU and SPD is planned for 1 June. Initially, 20 to 30 people are to be accommodated there, as announced by the Saxony State Directorate (LDS).

According to a spokesperson, these are to be exclusively men traveling alone whose repatriation is possible at short notice. They will be selected by the LDS on the basis of legality and expediency. A later expansion of the capacity to up to 120 places is planned.

Pilot project initially planned for one year

The state departure center is a pilot project that the CDU and SPD had agreed on in their coalition agreement. An initial period of one year is planned. The aim is to be able to better and more quickly return people who are required to leave the country and for whom there is no immediate obstacle to deportation to their home countries.

They are not to be distributed to the Saxon municipalities as has been the case to date. Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) had previously stated that the center should not be a detention facility. However, the residents would have to stay in the building at night and expect restrictions if they did not cooperate.

Location in Dresden

The center is being built in Dresden in a reception facility that has been in existence since 2021 and whose previous use will be discontinued. According to the LDS, the state capital has already been informed. Residents have received flyers in their letterboxes.
