Significantly fewer asylum applications were submitted in Saxony in 2024 than in the previous year. A trend that is reflected throughout Germany.

The number of asylum applications in Saxony fell last year. In the Free State, 11,295 refugees applied for asylum - 5,055 fewer than in the previous year. This is according to a recent publication by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). This means that Saxony accounted for 4.9 percent of all asylum applications in Germany. Most asylum seekers came from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.

After the number of asylum applications had risen steadily in recent years, a decline was recorded for the first time last year. Nationwide, the Federal Office received 229,751 initial applications last year. This is a good 30 percent less than in 2023.

North Rhine-Westphalia received the most applications with 45,280 - almost 20 percent of all applications in Germany. The total processing time for initial and subsequent applications for the whole of Germany was 8.7 months last year.
