After a first case of bluetongue disease at the beginning of September, there are further outbreaks in the district of Central Saxony. A total of 14 cases of the animal disease have been registered.

Bluetongue is spreading in the district of Central Saxony. The responsible veterinary office has already registered 14 cases across the district, according to the Central Saxony district office. Cattle, sheep and goats are affected. The authority assumes that the animal disease is also spreading among wild animals and is appealing to hunters to report animals with corresponding symptoms.

Bluetongue has been circulating in Germany since the beginning of July, and the first case was reported in the district of Central Saxony at the beginning of September. The disease is transmitted by small mosquitoes (midges) and can be fatal in severe cases. Cattle and sheep are particularly affected, but also goats and deer.

According to the district administration office, infected animals suffer from fever, reddening of the mucous membranes, increased salivation or foaming at the mouth, among other symptoms. The pathogen is reportedly harmless to humans.
