The flu epidemic in Saxony continues to weaken. For the 12th calendar week (March 17 to 23), the responsible state investigation institute reported 1540 reported influenza cases, a significant decrease (minus 34 percent) in the number of cases compared to the previous week. In the current flu season, 158 patients between the ages of 8 and 99 have died so far.
According to Barmer Krankenkasse, the flu has hit Saxony harder than most other federal states. In February 2025, the flu epidemic in the state peaked at 360 cases per 100,000 employees, according to data from the Barmer Institute for Health Systems Research. This exceeded the peak value from 2019 (349 per 100,000). Nationwide, a figure of 266 was recorded.
According to the health insurance company, the number of people affected in the current year has only been higher in Rhineland-Palatinate (393 per 100,000) and Saxony-Anhalt (373 per 100,000). Bremen recorded the lowest rates with 129 cases per 100,000 people entitled to sick pay.
