The CDU/CSU's push for the consistent rejection of certain asylum seekers is causing debate. SPD politician Petra Köpping calls for prudence.

Saxony's Deputy Prime Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) has spoken out in favor of clearly distancing herself from the AfD in the asylum debate. "The consensus among democratic parties not to cooperate with enemies of democracy must not be allowed to waver. I can only urge that we stick to this line," explained Köpping in Dresden.

Köpping urges objective debate

"Refugee policy is a sensitive issue. All the more reason for us to hold objective debates at federal and state level and work together to find solutions that are feasible and effective," emphasized the politician, who is responsible for social affairs and social cohesion in the minority government of Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). There should be no doubt about the common stance towards radicals.

Union wants border controls and refoulement

The reason for Köpping's statement is the announcement by Union chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz that he will table motions for a tough migration policy in the Bundestag - regardless of whether the AfD agrees. In future, the Union wants to consistently combine border controls with refoulement. According to a paper, anyone entering from a member state of the European Union or from the Schengen area and wishing to apply for asylum in Germany is not under threat.
