Museums, theaters: many things would not work without volunteers. In Wittenberg, cultural associations from eastern Germany want to provide new impetus. This should also involve networks, young talent and promotion.

Numerous cultural sponsorship associations from eastern Germany are coming together in Wittenberg on May 9 and 10 for a joint meeting. The aim of the first Day of Cultural Promotion Associations in Eastern Germany is to raise the profile of voluntary work in the city and state and to promote exchange between them, according to the organizers.

"With their cultural projects, cultural promotion associations create places of togetherness and strengthen personal commitment right down to the smallest villages," said the current Commissioner for Eastern Germany, Carsten Schneider (SPD) and patron of the event.

The program includes video portraits of selected associations from the eastern German states as well as workshops on association law, membership recruitment and funding applications. Discussions with politicians and businesses are also planned.

Association density in eastern Germany

In eastern Germany alone - including Berlin - around 4,100 cultural associations are involved in theater, museums, music schools, libraries and monument protection, according to the organizers. Nationwide, the number is around 20,500. Despite the mostly later founding after 1989, the density of associations in East Germany is above average.
