People without their own accommodation in Saxony can stay overnight in facilities. The use of the facilities has been recorded on the same night for three years. Demand is increasing.

In Saxony, more overnight stays by homeless people have been recorded than in the previous year. According to the State Statistical Office, as of January 31, 4,535 people - a good two-thirds of them men - were making use of the facilities on offer. That was 1,600 more than a year earlier. Most of them (almost a third) stayed overnight in the state capital Dresden and the fewest (45) in the district of Central Saxony.

Most of the homeless people recorded were foreigners

3,210 or 71 percent of the homeless people recorded did not have German citizenship, 37 percent of them came from Syria, a fifth from Ukraine and ten percent from Afghanistan. According to the statistics, people with recognized asylum who were still living in refugee accommodation were also considered homeless.

59 percent of the registered homeless people were between 18 and under 50 years old, just under a quarter were younger than 18 and 16 percent were older than 50. At 2,335 people (51 percent), single people formed the largest group and 37 percent were single parents or couples with children.

The statistics record homeless people who are housed in rented accommodation, collective accommodation or facilities on the night of January 31st to February 1st. It does not include people living on the street without any accommodation or staying with friends or relatives.
