The European Women's Football Championship is to be held in Germany in 2029. Leipzig wants to play a role in this.

Leipzig is to be the venue for the 2029 European Women's Football Championship. The city and Bundesliga club RB Leipzig announced that they had submitted an official application to the German Football Association with the Red Bull Arena.

"With our path to the Bundesliga, we have established our club and the city of Leipzig as a location for women's soccer in Germany - not least through the promotion and development of players through to their national teams," said RB soccer boss Viola Odebrecht. Hosting matches at the European Championship is a great opportunity.

A total of 17 cities had submitted their interest to the DFB to host the final tournament. Applications had to be submitted by Wednesday. The DFB will make a pre-selection of the eight venues on February 14. The association must now submit the preliminary bid documents for hosting the European Championship to UEFA by March 12, and the final portfolio must be submitted by August 27.

Competition from Scandinavia

The Executive Committee of the European association UEFA will announce the host in December. Denmark and Sweden would like to submit a joint bid, while Portugal and Poland are also interested. For the DFB, it would be the third home European Championship after 1989 and 2001.

The tournament is to be played with 16 teams over 31 match days. The requirements for the arenas have been increased once again compared to the past. According to UEFA, four stadiums are required for at least 20,000 fans, three for at least 30,000 and one for at least 50,000. The Red Bull Arena fits into the first two categories.

The Leipzig stadium has been the venue for three international tournaments to date. The 2005 Confederations Cup, the 2006 World Cup and last year's European Championship. The arena was extensively modernized for the home European Championships. The Conference League final is to be played there on May 27, 2026.
