SC Magdeburg wins top match against SG Flensburg-Handewitt

Defending champions SC Magdeburg have won the top game in the Bundesliga. The team from the city on the Elbe won 29:27 (17:13) at SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Omar Ingi Magnusson was Magdeburg's top scorer with ten goals, while goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez made 14 saves. With eight points from five games, Magdeburg remains in the top flight of the Bundesliga.

Less than 48 hours after the defeat against Kielce in the Champions League, Magdeburg had to play the top game in the Bundesliga. Magdeburg initially had problems finishing and fell behind early on, but then managed to play at eye level and took a two-goal lead (8:6/14th minute). Despite a number of time penalties against the club from the city on the Elbe, it extended its lead to four goals by the break.

The SCM repeatedly failed to pull five goals ahead after the break and was denied several times by goalkeeper Benjamin Buric. However, it was only when Magdeburg was short-handed that Flensburg managed to reduce the deficit to two goals (21:19/41). The SCM then conceded the equalizer when it was outnumbered, but did not allow the SG to turn the game around. Magdeburg's heavy workload in recent weeks was noticeable, but the SCM capitalized on several saves by Hernandez to open up a narrow lead again (27:24/56), which it managed to hold on to over time.
