The fans of FC Energie Cottbus have been waiting weeks for this news: Claus-Dieter "Pele" Wollitz will remain coach and sporting director of the third-division soccer club. "I am passionate about this job, I am passionate about our club and that is why we will continue as a cohesive unit in the coming season," said Wollitz in an Energie statement.
"I make no secret of the fact that I am very happy that we will continue with Pele into the coming season, regardless of the league. This gives us planning security and creates clear conditions for all further steps concerning our personnel planning," said president Sebastian Lemke. However, he emphasized that the perspective plan to make Wollitz the pure sporting director in the foreseeable future has not changed.
Many discussions in the Energie committees
For weeks, there had been discussions in the management bodies together with Wollitz about the future of the former professional. "At the time, we talked and discussed how things should continue in the future and then announced the summer of 2025 as the transition to pure sporting director. The developments at the club were not foreseeable at the time and, above all, it's not about me or any other person. The decisive factor is what is best for the team and the club," said the 59-year-old.
The decision was not an easy one to make, as the club fundamentally stands by the things that were once said. "Nevertheless, we are all convinced that we want to continue on our path in this constellation and in the spirit of FC Energie," said Wollitz, who will take charge of FC Energie as head coach for the 400th time on Saturday in the match against 1. FC Saarbrücken.
