The Upper Mining Authority expects the further remediation of the remnants of ore and hard coal mining in Saxony to cost around 100 million euros. This includes seven coal dumps, six shafts and four drainage tunnels, according to the office in Freiberg. The relics of old mining pose dangers and restrict development opportunities in the affected regions.
Since 2014, numerous old mining objects have already been remediated in the Ore Mountains and in the former coal mining areas. In addition to securing tunnels and shafts, this also involved the demolition of former facilities and operational buildings. According to its own figures, the Upper Mining Authority has financed 22 projects with 56.4 million euros.
