Third division soccer team Dynamo Dresden pulled off a cup surprise by knocking Fortuna Düsseldorf out of the competition in the first round. The Dresden team deserved to win 2:0 (1:0). Christoph Daferner, who played for Fortuna in the second half of last season, put Dresden ahead after 17 minutes. In front of 29,660 spectators, Robin Meißner (69) scored the decisive goal.
For 45 minutes, it was not clear which of the two teams was a second and which a third division team. Dynamo forced Fortuna into their half with aggressive, continuous pressing, impressing with quick combinations, great willingness to run and imaginative actions in front of Florian Kastenmeier's goal. If there was anything to criticize, it was the final consistency in finishing. There was virtually nothing from Düsseldorf. The visitors rarely came close to the Dynamo goal and did not create a clear chance in the first half.
Fortuna better after the break
That changed after the break. Fortuna now pressed and had great chances through Jona Niemiec (46') and Felix Klaus (48'), which Dynamo keeper Tim Schreiber thwarted. Dynamo needed ten minutes to calm the game down and get back into the game. After a fine pinpoint pass from Oliver Batista Meier, Meißner scored with deliberation.
