BSW party leader Sahra Wagenknecht does not rule out running for chancellor

BSW party leader Sahra Wagenknecht has not completely ruled out running for chancellor in the 2025 Bundestag elections. "We'll talk about it when we know where we stand at the end of the year," the former Left Party politician told the Rheinische Post (Saturday). "We have good polls and great potential, but we should also keep our feet on the ground. We were founded just two months ago. At the end of the year, we will see exactly where we stand." Wagenknecht had left the Left Party and founded a new party, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance.

The BSW is hoping for strong election results in the European elections on June 9 and in the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg in September. Wagenknecht reiterated that she could imagine working with the CDU in Saxony under certain circumstances. "Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer in Saxony, for example, is actually one of the few who support our position that energy prices must fall and that we need a foreign trade policy that serves our interests," Wagenknecht emphasized. She added: "If we become strong enough to shape a new policy together with others, we will enter into a coalition. We are not available as a majority procurer for the way things are."
