After the defeat in the state elections, the leadership duo of the Saxon Greens are visibly disappointed. "It is not an easy day for us after the election and we cannot be satisfied with our result," said co-chair Marie Müser. They had "fought for a much better result". "In this overall situation, we Greens did not succeed well enough in getting through with our issues and goals." According to the preliminary results, the Greens achieved 5.1 percent.
Many voters were driven by fear of the AfD as the strongest force, said Müser. Climate and environmental protection played a subordinate role. However, the party wants to continue to shape Saxon state politics with its content. "We are the only force in the state that clearly cares about climate and environmental protection, even if you can't win a flower pot with this topic right now," said Müser.
No personnel consequences
According to state chairwoman Christin Furtenbacher, the election result poses challenges for state politics. "The CDU and Michael Kretschmer have contributed to the fact that forming a government is now so tricky," said Furtenbacher. With "fear-mongering and polarization", they had not only pushed the tasks of a future government out of the election campaign, but also "strengthened right-wing extremist and populist narratives", criticized the state chairwoman. The "constant finger-pointing" towards the Greens had outlined enemy stereotypes and poisoned the discourse. It was now up to the CDU to create stable conditions in the state.
Furtenbacher said that they did not want to draw any personal conclusions after the election defeat. They had "formed a strong team in this election campaign" and had "consistently gone through this election campaign together with all our strength".
