The Colditz Castle in the district of Leipzig will close from November 1 for reconstruction and modernization. As Schlösserland Sachsen announced on Wednesday, the castle will be closed for five months. The museum is fundamentally rebuilt and renovated, therefore no visits or guided tours are possible until spring.
In the future, "a newly designed adventure tour" with modern technology will tell the castle's story. "For the first time, the stately rooms as well as the asylum rooms can be entered and interactively discovered," according to Schlösserland. On April 17, 2024, the castle is to be reopened to visitors.
Colditz Castle looks back on a long history. Thus, according to Schlösserland, it was considered in the 15th and 16th centuries as a hunting lodge and widow's seat of the Electress Margarethe of Austria. In 1829, the castle became an asylum for the mentally ill. In 1938 "early euthanasia murders" occurred in Colditz, and at the beginning of the war the castle became a prisoner of war camp.
