Chemnitz kicks off its year as European Capital of Culture 2025 with a big party in the city center on Saturday. Interest is high: there are only a few free beds left in the city center.

This weekend, Chemnitz kicks off the year as European Capital of Culture 2025 and interest is huge. "The hotels in the city are very well booked, and there are still a few rooms available in the city center for last-minute bookings," Stefanie Weise from the Chemnitz Zwickau Region Tourism Association told the German Press Agency. There is also a good selection of accommodation for tourists in the surrounding area. The region is very well connected for motorists or by train.

Holiday apartments in the style of the 1960s-1980s

In addition, the municipal housing company GGG is offering guests of the European Capital of Culture a total of 40 vacation apartments in the city of Chemnitz. "The first apartments have been completed in time for the opening weekend of the European Capital of Culture and can be booked immediately," said Simone Kalew, Managing Director of GGG. Some of the accommodations are furnished with furniture and accessories from the 1960s to 80s and are intended to give guests an authentic, local flair of the time.

Big kick-off show on Saturday

The year as European Capital of Culture in Chemnitz will begin with a big show on Saturday (January 18). Tens of thousands of visitors are expected in the city alongside prominent guests. Admission to the opening show at the Karl Marx Monument, probably Chemnitz's best-known landmark, begins at 5.00 pm and there will be security checks at the entrances. According to the city, there is room for around 20,000 people.

Several streets in the city center will be closed due to the events. The city recommends that visitors use free park & ride parking spaces and travel into the city by streetcar or bus. There are also additional trains to and from Chemnitz. The area at the Marx Monument is a good ten-minute walk from the main train station.
