RB Leipzig remain in the top flight of the Bundesliga. Coach Marco Rose's team beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2:1 (1:1) at home at the end of the 14th matchday and are now equal on points with the Hessians in third place in the table.
A week and a half after the clear 3-0 cup win, Leipzig found it more difficult against Eintracht this time, but came away victorious once again. As in the DFB Cup, Benjamin Sesko (19th minute) put Leipzig ahead in front of 40,193 spectators before Nathaniel Brown (40th minute) equalized. Loïs Openda (50) marked the final score.
Now an even tougher opponent on paper awaits Leipzig, who are already out of the Champions League after six games without a point. Next Friday (20:30/DAZN) they will face FC Bayern Munich.
RB saw Xaver Schlager make his comeback after 226 days in the starting eleven. National player David Raum was also back in the squad for the first time. Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller made five changes after the 3-2 draw in Lyon. Among others, Hugo Larsson returned to the starting eleven after his injury.
Sesko takes the lead again
The ball landed in the visitors' goal after just 30 seconds. But Openda, who initially failed to beat Kevin Trapp with a lob, was offside when Christoph Baumgartner passed the ball and scored with a follow-up shot. The header from Sesko (19), who jumped higher and headed in after a brilliant save by Trapp from Baumgartner in a direct duel with the keeper, then counted. Two minutes later, the Slovenian had the 2:0 on his feet, this time Trapp was the winner.
In Leipzig's phase of pressure, Eintracht slowly woke up. Maarten Vandevoordt first saved against Larsson (30'), then the crossbar prevented Omar Marmoush from equalizing from a free-kick from 17 metres. When Can Uzun skillfully passed the ball to Brown, who had started the game, he shot from 15 meters out on the half-left to make it 1:1 (40'). Vandevoordt stretched in vain.
After the changeover, the hosts once again got off to the better start. Openda was wide awake after a corner and shot the ball, extended by Baumgartner, into the short corner from half-left close range to make it 2-1. Eintracht remained dangerous, however, repeatedly causing problems for the RB defense.
Benjamin Henrichs saved a header from Arthur Theate (74) just off the line. Marmoush (75) then had the equalizer on his feet, but was offside. At the other end, Nusa found his master in Trapp (78). The final phase developed into an open exchange of blows.
RB face Wolfsburg again in the cup
Before the game, RB were awarded a home game in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup draw, but perennial opponents VfL Wolfsburg are not necessarily a dream draw. "We have to do a lot of things much better against the Wolves than we did recently, be it in the DFB Cup or in the Bundesliga," said RB Sport managing director Marcel Schäfer after the recent 5-1 defeat in the league against his former club. In the previous season, the Saxons were eliminated in the second round of the cup after a 1-0 defeat in Wolfsburg.
