The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team suffered another defeat in the East German duel against ThSV Eisenach. 15 days after the 24:30 cup defeat in Eisenach, the team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson also lost 31:36 (16:18) in the Bundesliga duel in front of a home crowd. In front of 5,272 spectators, Lukas Binder was SC DHfK's best scorer with five goals. The outstanding national player Marko Grgic scored ten times for the team of coach Misha Kaufmann. Eisenach (12:12) moved past Leipzig, who are level on points, in the table and are now tenth.
Eisenach, who had previously surprised with a 32:31 victory over leaders Melsungen, started confidently and quickly took a 3:0 lead (4th minute). The home side had great difficulties with the Thuringians' agile defense and needed almost seven minutes to score their first goal. The game clearly picked up pace midway through the first half. Leipzig now increasingly punished the visitors' lack of retreat with quick transition play and tied the scores at 11:11 through Franz Semper in the 22nd minute.
Eisenach remains unimpressed
However, Eisenach did not allow itself to be impressed by that. They repeatedly found gaps in the center in attack and converted their chances with great efficiency. As former national goalkeeper Silvio Heinevetter was also on top form, ThSV deserved to lead at the break.
The Leipzig club got off to the better start in the second half and equalized to make it 18:18 in the 35th minute. Eisenach remained composed and struck back with a 4:1 run to make it 22:19 in the 41st minute. Although William Bogojevic then injected fresh impetus into Leipzig's attacking play, the visitors always had a suitable response at the ready and kept SC DHfK at bay in commanding fashion. After Grgic stretched the gap to 31:26 (52'), all you could hear were the chants of the Eisenach fans who had made the journey. In the end, the visitors celebrated their fourth consecutive must-win game against SC DHfK.
