After extensive construction work, rail traffic has been running on two tracks over the historic Chemnitz viaduct again since Saturday. This means that everything has now been completely renewed for the second track: rails, ballast, cables, signals and overhead line catenaries, Deutsche Bahn announced. With the commissioning of the second track, the end of the work on the listed structure made of mild steel is now within reach. It is more than 100 years old and part of the Chemnitz railroad arch on the Saxony-Franconia main line. In the coming months, further work will be carried out on the overhead line and drainage, for example. Short-term closures will be necessary for this. The remaining work on the railroad arch and the viaduct should be completed in 2025.
