In Saxony's skilled trades sector, interest in apprenticeships remained high last year. In 2023, 5558 new apprenticeship contracts were signed, as announced by the Saxon Crafts Day in Dresden on Monday. This was only nine fewer than in 2022. There was particular interest in professions in automotive mechatronics, electronics and plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology.
Compared to the previous year, apprenticeships in bricklaying, building cleaning and butchery were in particularly high demand. There was a decline in apprenticeships in metal construction, carpentry and office management. According to the figures, almost a quarter of all apprentices in the Saxon trades are women - they mainly work as hairdressers, opticians, dental technicians and confectioners.
Hundreds of apprenticeships have already been advertised for the coming training year, according to the Crafts Day. Saxon craft businesses are looking for both graduates with a secondary school leaving certificate and high school graduates as apprentices.
